Job Aids and Performance Support tools are an often neglected part of the training and coaching process. But they have many benefits.
The first is Intersection. Job Aids and Performance Support tools are one with the work or task. They intersect training with the task at hand -- like the voice of the GPS system telling you where to go when driving.
Second is Mobility. Performance support tools go where the work is rather than taking you away from the work. They are there at the desktop, the machine, the patient, the control panel.
Third is Focused. Good Job Aids and Performance Support are simple and focused to the specific taskat hand, presenting “just in time” information in an easy to understand format. They are not cluttered up by theory or framework. They provide key information to keep the person directly on task.
Finally, Job Aids and Performance Support are Flexible. They are designed to work through the process with the user--and are adaptable enough to help the user through the next step, even if it’s not a linear flow
And for the manager or admin, good performance support tools can be tracked and analyzed to see how they are being used and how effective they are.
